Koninklijke Vlaamse Schouwburg (KVS)

Hôtel Solvay: Horta’s Art Nouveau Masterpiece

Hôtel Solvay, designed by Victor Horta between 1894 and 1903, is considered one of the purest and most refined examples of Belgian Art Nouveau. The mansion, commissioned by industrialist Armand Solvay, reflects Horta's innovative vision, which focuses on light, space, and fluid architectural movement. From the monumental hall to the carefully chosen materials and decorative details, the house exudes a total concept in which architecture, furniture, and art blend seamlessly.More than just elegant linesThe building is not only an aesthetic masterpiece, but also a highlight of technical innovation for its time. Horta integrated modern construction techniques, such as visible metal structures and ingenious lighting, to create an interior that is warm, dynamic, and functional. Every element, from the graceful staircase to the organic lines in wood and metal, contributes to the unique atmosphere for which Horta was internationally acclaimed.Today, Hotel Solvay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This recognition highlights the exceptional value of the building and makes a visit there a special experience. A guided tour offers the chance to discover this iconic monument in all its glory and to experience up close the creative power of one of the greatest architects of his time.Deze rondleiding wordt gegeven in het Engels. Guest at van Buuren: art, architecture and the Art of Living

The museum and gardens of David and Alice van Buuren form a rare preserved total work of art in which art, architecture, and lifestyle come together. The house, built in 1928 in the Amsterdam School style, was furnished without any financial constraints: the couple personally selected leading Belgian, French, and Dutch designers to create a refined Art Deco interior that has been preserved in its original state to this day. The Van Buurens welcomed an exclusive circle of guests, including artists, politicians, and international personalities, giving the house an almost mythical allure.Inside, the intimacy of their private world still reigns supreme. Every piece of furniture, carpet, work of art, and stained-glass window was chosen with exceptional care by a couple who had an impeccable eye for art and design. David van Buuren was both a good friend and patron of Gustave Van de Woestijne and owned no fewer than 31 of his paintings. The art collection also includes works by Hercule Seghers, Georges Minne, James Ensor, and Rik Wouters, among others, and is one of the most remarkable private collections in Belgium. The surrounding gardens reflect the same refinement. They were designed at the instigation of Alice van Buuren by the two greatest Belgian landscape architects of their time: Jules Buyssens and René Pechère. A recent restoration was awarded the European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award and is considered a textbook example of respectful heritage conservation. During the tour, you will discover both the museum house and the gardens exactly as the Van Buurens intended them to be: unique, elegant, and imbued with artistic vision.

Maison Roosenboom (EN)

On Faider Street in Brussels–Ixelles stands a remarkable building from a time when art and architecture merged into enchanting creations: Maison Roosenboom. Designed in 1900 by painter-architect Albert Roosenboom, this house represents a highlight of Brussels Art Nouveau, alongside icons such as the Horta Museum and Maison Hannon. Once abandoned and declared uninhabitable, the building underwent an extensive restoration from 2020 onwards, returning it to its original splendour. With its floral wrought ironwork, elegant lines and richly detailed decoration, Maison Roosenboom embodies the spirit of an artistic revolution, where every detail speaks of the ambitions and creativity of a remarkable era. From Decline to Renewal: A Story of Meticulous RestorationThe restoration of Maison Roosenboom is a story of passion, patience and craftsmanship. The façade, featuring sgraffito panels by Privat Livemont and a striking bow window, has regained its original colours. Inside, the interiors come back to life through mosaics, wall panelling and ceiling paintings, carefully restored to their historic appearance. The restoration reveals not only the beauty of the building, but also the stories behind its details: from the symbolism embedded in the decoration to the techniques used at the time. Every space — from the impressive entrance hall to the intimate salon — breathes the atmosphere of a bygone era, where contemporary expertise and historical authenticity go hand in hand.Maison Roosenboom stands as a symbol of Brussels’ rich architectural heritage. The house invites exploration and admiration for the ambition and craftsmanship of a period in which art and everyday life were inseparably linked. A visit to this exceptional residence is a journey through time — an experience that brings the beauty and stories of Art Nouveau vividly to life.
