The Birthplace of Art Nouveau
Join our guide on a tour of Maison Autrique, the first house designed by the legendary architect Victor Horta in 1893. This townhouse in Schaerbeek marks the beginning of the Art Nouveau movement, which is already subtly evident in its organic lines, innovative materials, and use of light. The house embodies the spirit of an era in which art and architecture merged into a harmonious whole. From the graceful banister to the intricate stained-glass windows: every detail tells the story of Horta’s revolutionary vision.
Maison Autrique was built for engineer Eugène Autrique and served as Horta’s calling card for his later masterpieces, such as the Hôtel van Eetvelde. In this house, you can see how Art Nouveau breaks away from traditional styles and introduces a new, freer design language. The house is a testament to the ambition and craftsmanship of a young Horta.
A visit to Maison Autrique is like stepping back in time, where you can feel the revolutionary spirit of Art Nouveau. Horta’s passion and ingenuity are evident throughout the house. This guided tour is a journey of discovery for both architecture and history enthusiasts, as well as anyone who loves unique places.
