Zin in No(o)rd is het resultaat van een ingrijpende renovatie van WTC I en WTC II, iconen van de Brusselse Noordwijk. In de jaren zestig werd hier, onder leiding van Paul Vanden Boeynants, het Manhattanplan ontwikkeld. Een modern kantoordistrict zag het licht met brede lanen die de auto's uitnodigde tot in het centrum van de stad. De hoge, onpersoonlijke torens stonden letterlijk boven het sociale netwerk en stedelijke weefsel en zouden met elkaar verbonden worden door loopbruggen. Het oorspronkelijke plan werd maar gedeeltelijk uitgevoerd en de nieuwe Noordwijk werd een plek die nooit echt tot leven kwam.Vandaag waait hier een nieuwe wind tussen de glazen torens: van gesloten donkere gebouwen naar meer openheid, gemengde functies en aandacht voor leefkwaliteit. Zin in No(o)rd verankert die transformatie in één krachtig architecturaal gebaar en werd hiervoor beloond door in 2025 uitgeroepen te worden tot World's Best Tall Building. Ook kreeg het project een plek op de longlist van de prestigieuze EUmies awards en op de shortlist van Brussels Architecture Prize.Het Belpairegebouw: duurzame reconversie als uitgangspuntCentraal in het project staat het Belpairegebouw waar een 20-tal administraties van de Vlaamse overheid onderdak vinden. De zeer ingrijpende renovatie werd bedacht en uitgevoerd door de architecten van 51N4E in samenwerking met l’AUC, Jaspers-Eyers Architects en landschapsarchitecten Plant en Houtgoed. Er werd niet vertrokken niet van tabula rasa, maar van de bestaande structuur en materialen, die waar mogelijk werd behouden of een nieuw leven kreeg. Die keuze vormt de kern van de duurzame ambitie: minder sloop, minder materiaalverbruik en een sterke focus op flexibiliteit, energie-efficiëntie en aanpasbaarheid in de tijd. Tijdens het bezoek krijg je inzicht in hoe een verouderd kantoorgebouw werd omgevormd tot een hedendaagse werkomgeving, met aandacht voor licht, openheid en relatie met de publieke ruimte.De rondleiding eindigt zowaar op een park hoog boven de stad, op het groene dak op de 29e verdieping, na ook nog een bezoek aan hotel The Standard die het gebouw deelt met de Vlaamse overheid. Het panorama over Brussel en de havenzone maakt de schaal en context van het project tastbaar. Tegelijk toont het dak hoe vergroening en klimaatbewust ontwerpen ook op grote hoogte mogelijk zijn. Een afsluiter die letterlijk en figuurlijk perspectief biedt op de toekomst van bouwen in de stad.

Het museum en de tuinen van David en Alice van Buuren vormen een zeldzaam bewaard totaalwerk waarin kunst, architectuur en verfijnde levenskunst samenkomen. De woning, gebouwd in 1928 in de stijl van de Amsterdamse School, werd ingericht zonder enige financiële beperking: het echtpaar selecteerde persoonlijk toonaangevende Belgische, Franse en Nederlandse ontwerpers om een verfijnd art-deco-interieur te creëren dat tot op vandaag in zijn originele staat is bewaard. De Van Buurens ontvingen hier een exclusieve gastenkring van kunstenaars, politici en internationale persoonlijkheden, wat het huis een bijna mythische allure geeft.Binnen heerst nog steeds de intimiteit van hun privéwereld. Elk meubel, tapijt, kunstwerk en glasraam werd met uitzonderlijke zorg gekozen door een koppel dat een feilloze neus had voor kunst en design. David van Buuren was zowel goede vriend als mecenas van Gustave Van de Woestijne en bezat maar liefst 31 schilderijen van hem. De kunstverzameling omvat daarnaast werken van onder meer Hercule Seghers, Georges Minne, James Ensor en Rik Wouters, en behoort tot de meest opmerkelijke privécollecties van België.De omliggende tuinen weerspiegelen diezelfde verfijning. Ze werden op aansturen van Alice van Buuren ontworpen door de twee grootste Belgische landschapsarchitecten van hun tijd: Jules Buyssens en René Pechère. Een recente restauratie werd bekroond met de European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award en geldt als een schoolvoorbeeld van respectvolle erfgoedzorg. Tijdens de rondleiding ontdek je zowel het museumhuis als de tuinen precies zoals de Van Buurens ze bedoeld hadden: uniek, elegant en doordrenkt van kunstzinnige visie.

The historic façade of the Hôtel Aubecq, a masterpiece by Victor Horta, can once again be admired up close and from a surprising perspective. Under the name Aubecq 3.0, urban.brussels presents a horizontal view of the façade.The stately mansion on Avenue Louise was built in 1902 for lawyer and industrialist Octave Aubecq. Despite protests, the house was demolished in 1950. Jean Delhaye, a student and patron of Horta’s work, managed to salvage the facade—including stones, window frames, doors, and balconies—from the demolition containers.After that, the 600 recovered stones from the facade began a long journey, moving from one vacant lot or storage facility to another. In 2001, the bricks became the property of the Brussels Region, after which they were cleaned and digitized in 3D, before being temporarily displayed to the public in 2011.Stones with a FutureThe Aubecq facade, which was recognized as movable cultural heritage in 2014, is finally receiving the visibility it deserves. It was reconstructed on a horizontal plane at the Constructiv premises in Sint-Agatha-Berchem.This initiative is part of an unprecedented public-private partnership between Urban and Constructiv, which is developing a training center for construction and heritage professions in Sint-Agatha-Berchem. The flat arrangement of the preserved elements is intended to make the remains of this masterpiece accessible to the public and also to serve as an educational tool for the artisans of tomorrow. In the longer term, a sustainable, full or partial reconstruction of the facade on the site is being considered.

The impressive Gare Maritime served as a transshipment hall where tons of goods were processed daily, while the stately Royal Warehouse served as a storage facility for valuable and controlled goods. The site was a world unto itself, with customs services, rail lines, workshops, and offices that formed the economic heart of Brussels.Today, Tour & Taxis demonstrates how heritage and urban development can reinforce each other.
