The collective spirit of Brussels
The Marolles are often called the heart and soul of Brussels, and for good reason. Originally located outside the city walls, this neighborhood grew into a close-knit community of artisans and laborers who gathered around the Church of Our Lady of the Chapel. Over the centuries, the neighborhood retained its unique character, where social cohesion and solidarity have always been central. Today, you can still see that vibrant community in the narrow streets, small squares, and local cafés, where neighbors meet every day.
In the 19th century, the neighborhood flourished with the arrival of factories, workshops, and tenements, which attracted workers seeking employment. Even today, the Marolles is a neighborhood on the move: young people, creative types, and tourists are discovering the charm of the area, searching for vintage clothing, antique furniture, and local curiosities. The daily flea market on Place du Jeu de Balle is perhaps the best example of this lively mix, where commerce, social interaction, and culture come together.
At the same time, the Marolles are undergoing a gentle transformation. Projects such as the creation of Brigitinnenpark behind the church of the same name demonstrate that investments are being made in the neighborhood’s infrastructure and quality of life, without losing its authentic character. During a guided walking tour through the Marolles, you’ll experience both the historical background and the contemporary vibrancy of this working-class neighborhood. It’s a unique opportunity to discover Brussels’ social richness, creative entrepreneurship, and vibrant energy up close.
