van Buuren Museum & Garden
Interior visit : van Buuren Museum & Gardens
The roaring twenties in Uccle
The house of banker and patron David van Buuren was built in 1928. The exterior can be considered a typical example of Amsterdam School architecture.
The interior is a masterpiece of the Art Deco style. The unique ensemble was furnished by renowned Belgian, French, and Dutch designers. The museum house exudes the intimate atmosphere of a private residence, characterized by rare furniture, signed carpets, stained glass windows, sculptures, and paintings by Belgian and international masters. Each piece remains in its original place.
In 1913, Mr. van Buuren bought his first painting by Gustaaf van de Woestijne: later, around 30 more works by this Latem artist followed. This valuable collection – including works by Hercules Seghers, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Georges Minne, Rik Wouters, and others – can still be seen in the house.
After the death of her husband, Mrs. van Buuren tended to the now-classified garden out of love for her husband and their unique Art Deco house. Today, the foundation ‘Friends of the David and Alice van Buuren Museum’ manages both the museum and the gardens.
