The Solvay Library
The Solvay Library was built in 1901 on the initiative of industrialist and patron Ernest Solvay for the Université Libre de Bruxelles’s Institute of Sociology. The magnificent building is located in the Parc Leopold in the middle of the European district.
The plans were designed by Constant Bosmans and Henri Vandeveld, assisted in this by Emile Waxweiler, professor of sociology at the ULB. The library features a spacious and comfortable reading room, abundantly lit by large windows with beautiful stained glass. Behind the Art Nouveau facades, there are numerous work rooms with padded doors.
A remarkable restoration campaign in the 1990s gave it back its original splendour. Today, it is a venue for events.
