Villa Carpentier, also known as Villa Les Platanes, is a luxurious country house in Art Nouveau style, built by Victor Horta in 1899.

Horta designs this summer retreat as a Gesamtkunstwerk, giving form to every little detail of it.

The ensemble comprises the main house, the living areas for the concierge and a coach house, surrounded by a marvellous park of three hectares also designed by Horta.

Hotel Solvay,Unesco World Heritage – Horta Inside-Out 2018

Hotel Solvay - Hani Kanaftchian

By choosing Victor Horta and his specific design approach, Armand Solvay expresses his own progressive attitude.

Two skylight domes, each above a light and ventilation shaft, are visible from the other side of the street. As essential constructive elements they enable Horta to design a revolutionary interior.

To implement his concept of a Gesamtkunstwerk, Horta turns to his friends of the Belgian art world. Luckily, this outstanding building could be preserved even in times when Art Nouveau was less appreciated. A masterpiece!

Les Ecuries van de Tram (the tram stables)

180629_markt_les_ecuries_van_de_tram_052Bis1200

“Les Ecuries van de Tram” is located in the historic heart of Schaarbeek and is in one of the oldest tram depots in Brussels. The stables were built for the horses that pulled the trams, but have since been restored and converted into a refined cultural, ecological and social meeting place.

On Fridays and Saturdays, there is a market with wide range of organic agricultural produce on offer. The producer-consumer chain is very short and the market vendors really know their products: fruit, vegetables, bread, meat, sustainably-produced coffee and other specialties. High time to explore the market and its surroundings.

Meeting point: corner of Rue Rubensstraat and Rue royale Sainte-Marie/Koninklijke Sint-Mariastraat, Schaarbeek

Shopping in Transparency : the stores for Wolfers and Waucquez- Horta Inside-Out 2018

Victor Horta designs the store for textile dealer Waucquez as a promotion and distribution space.

The roof, almost entirely made of glass, and the central light shaft spread the daylight through the entire building, thus emphasizing the texture and colour of the fabrics.

Not far from Waucquez, Horta designs a jewelry store for the Wolfers family, including studios and office spaces.
